Lady Colonials Add International Flavor in Retooling Effort
It’s the explosion of a trend that began with the emergence of Sugeiry Monsac, a Dominican Republic native, as an all-conference player four years ago. Nigerian native Joy Ike spent one year with the Colonials, and England native Mary Durojave arrived as a freshman last year.
Now the Lady Colonials will add freshman Spanish forward Vega Martinez-Gimeno, freshman 6′6 Latvian center Anna Gailite, junior Dominican guard Yohanna Morton, junior Latvian guard Kristine Silijara, and two Ohio freshmen in forward Libby Ladrach and guard Jasmine Tate.
You can read more about the individuals by reading the official release. Robert Morris had several spots open following an injury plagued season last year. Sade Logan, Kendra Williams, Grace Williams, Latavia Vails, and Angela Pace were all seniors, while Pittsburgh native Monica Jones played just the first half of the season before finding herself ineligible.
Colonials Corner will do some research to find out some additional information about the new recruits, but we can already tell you that Sugeiry Monsac was a major influence in convincing Yohanna Morton – who played at Monsac’s junior college – to come to Robert Morris.

All-Time Robert Morris Football Team
Over the next week or so, we’ll keep this post pinned to the top of the page. I invite all of you to submit your recommendations for a 25-man starting lineup. That’s 11 offensive players, 11 defensive players, and three special teamers – kicker, punter, return specialist. We’ll assume that it’s a standard lineup (only two wide receivers, a tight end, a 4-3 defense, etc), but I’m willing to make this a two-deep depth chart if we get enough responses and discussion.
Feel free to take an on active roll in the comments. Defend your picks, critique others (be kind and constructive), submit just one or two players or submit an entire two-deep roster. Up to you. We’ll give you about a week, and next Tuesday, I’ll post the results and contribute my own version.
Have at it.

Chappell to France (News and Notes)

Jeremy Chappell will begin his professional career in France.
With the Pittsburgh Summer Basketball League ending tonight, a few pieces of news to pass along, plus a few site updates to inform you of. One we’ll mention right now: I’m now on Twitter, so you can click the link on the right side of the page to follow OR you can follow along at the bottom of the page. I might move the twitter feed up once things get going.
- Former Robert Morris guard Jeremy Chappell just signed a deal to play professionally in France. He’ll be joining JL Bourg-en-Bresse, part of the Ligue Nationale de Basketball (LNB). It’s a three-tier league set-up like most European soccer leagues. The top teams in a lower league earn promotions to the top league, while the worst teams in the top league get bumped down to the lower league and have to earn their way back up to the top. The bottom three teams in the “ProA” tier of the LNB get bumped down, while the regular season and playoff champions in the “ProB” tier get bumped up. Bourg-en-Bresse sits in ProB and was very close to earning a promotion to the top tier last year, finishing 3rd with a 23-11 record.
- No Robert Morris players made it into the final in the summer league. UPMC and CRONS, two RMU-laden summer league teams, both won their opening round games on Monday night at the GreenTree SportsPlex. But the Colonials players weren’t able to make it to Tuesday night’s games, meaning their teams were at a distinct disadvantage against the Pitt-laden squads of PBC and LAIR. Those two teams won and met in the finals tonight.

News and Notes (Summer League Playoff Schedule Edition)
From there, the hope is to work out the final few bugs and then see if/how some additional features – more photos, video, additional multimedia, a message board – can be included as we go along. The primary focus, though, is to get the true format of the site up and running this weekend. Keep your fingers and toes crossed that all goes well.

Pittsburgh Basketball Club Summer League Recap – 7/9

Round Five of the Pittsburgh Summer Basketball League sponsored by the Pittsburgh Basketball Club is in the books. Just one more week of round-robin play remains for the playoffs begin and the champion is crowned.
Colonials Corner took in all three games at the GreenTree Sportsplex on Wednesday night, and with a few Pitt Panthers shelved, the players opened up the throttle and upped the intensity – and the acrobatics – from the opening week. All three games, but especially the middle one between UPMC and SPK, had a variety of players playing well above the rim.
All three games featured your Robert Morris Colonials, with the middle game serving as the highlight for a packed gym. Game one featured LAIR against Jeremy Chappell and Khalif Foster’s PGT team and went down to the wire. Game two featured Mezie Nwigwe and Lijah Thompson taking UPMC against Rob Robinson and SPK. Game three had Dallas Green and Russell Johnson’s CRONS squad trying to hold off a Pitt-heavy PBC squad.

Basketball Scheduling Notes
The news includes a change in the conference scheduling for women’s teams, as the NEC moves towards a reduction in travel costs; the continuation of a one-sided but entertaining rivalry that was expected to die; a surprise addition to the hoops schedule for the men featuring another major state university; and an early look at how strong the schedule will be for the defending champs.
